London should not lose the English National Opera

Caroline Pidgeon has written to the Secretary of State for Culture, calling for the Arts Council to reverse its decision to remove funding from the English National Opera if it does not move out of London.

Caroline said:

"I recognise the need for powerful cultural offerings in all parts of the UK, as does the ENO, but this should not be achieved by closing a respected cultural institution of nearly 100 years standing, making large numbers of artists and support staff unemployed, and losing the extraordinary value for money that the ENO brings. ...

"The concept of 'levelling up' requires that infrastructure around the country is not diminished in one area to benefit another. That surely goes for cultural institutions as much as for any other form of public good."
